Message from the Director
The photograph above shows the magnificent new building of the Kota Kinabalu Regional Library across the musical fountain at Perdana Park in Tanjung Aru.
While final touches are made before the building is handed over to the library, the library management is busy working with the Public Works Department (JKR) to finalise the interior design works for each of the floors in this six storey, 62,000 square feet library. Members of the public will be delighted to note that the interior and layout of the building will be as mesmerizing as the exterior.
Many of the features and facilities planned have never been available in public libraries in Sabah before.
At a time when information is available with a touch on a smart phone, many believe that the role played by public libraries are no longer significant.
On the contrary, what we have seen is that the roles of public libraries have changed and adapted, and remain dynamic to reflect the needs of the clientele it serves. It is no longer a store room where a stern-looking bespectacled woman in a bun is glaring at patrons to keep them quiet. Indeed, libraries have become the informal community meeting place where people of all races and beliefs come to seek personal and professional development, meet friends, do some personal quiet self study and so on.
While many people with higher socioeconomic status routinely purchase books and magazines and conduct their research online in the comfort of their own home, many individuals and families do not have that luxury and have to go to the library. Universal access is still the most important strength of the library. The fact that anyone can simply walk into a library and not be deprived access to information is the true meaning of information for all.
It is my hope that with more libraries being opened, people in and around Kota Kinabalu will flock to this new library and use its facilities when it opens early in the year 2018.
